Panaeolus subg. Panaeolus (Fr.) Quél. Basionym. Agaricus subgen. Panaeolus Fr., Summa vegetabilium Scandinaviae 2: 297 (1849) Type species. Panaeolus papilionaceus Notes. Traditionally, subgenus Panaeolus is roughly equivalent to Panaeolus s. s. According to the results of the phylogenetic analyses, the type species P. papilionaceus is clustered in clade B 1 together with other species referred to as the P. papilionaceus species complex in some studies (Voto and Angelini 2024). Clade B is phylogenetically supported with statistical values of 97 / 96 / 1.0 (SH-aLRT / UFBoot / PP). Two subclades are supported: B 1 is a widely distributed lineage with samples from the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania, whereas B 2, represented by a single species, P. punjabensis Asif, Firdous, Izhar, Niazi & Khalid, is known only from western Asia.
