Abstract

This GitHub repository contains the code for the PreserVamos mobile app (v1.4.5). What is PreserVamos? PreserVamos is an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Accelerator Lab, together with the participatory science project AppEAR and different municipalities in the Province of Buenos Aires, to study freshwater aquatic environments. The UNDP Accelerator Lab has been working with various initiatives and policies related to the environment. Within this framework, a collaboration was established with AppEAR, who designed a tool that works through an application where users can study aquatic environments. It is designed so that it can be used by people with and without scientific knowledge, since by observing the environment, users complete a short form and upload some photos that capture what they observed. The value of the tool lies in the fact that anyone can map a body of water, contributing to understanding the state of the habitat. This generates information and, in this way, helps to preserve it. This project aims to generate environmental knowledge through the interaction of different actors: citizens, science, and the State. Citizen participation plays a fundamental role in building knowledge and strategies to address socio-environmental issues. It ensures individuals’ involvement in the public sphere through their identity as citizens, as members of a political community, and serves as a mechanism for social empowerment. Citizen participation enables the co-creation of public policies designed in an integrated way and tailored to the particular characteristics of each community. To build a connection with the environment in which one lives, through their relationship with nature and their understanding of it. Visit our website at www.preservamos.ar
