The Icosahedral Origin of the Fine Structure Constant: Retirement Notice
Abstract
This is a Retirement Notice. Paper 31 (v1.0, 19 January 2026) presented a closed-form expression for the inverse fine structure constant, α⁻¹ = e⁵ − 6√3 − 1 + 1/66 − (2 − 1/(e²√3))/66³ − (e² − 3 − (e² − 1)/(66e))/66⁵, claimed to match CODATA 2018 at "0.05σ — effectively exact, 5 parts per quadrillion." The paper is retired. Its distinctive content — the two harmonic correction terms with transcendental coefficients in e — does not meet the programme's current discipline: the coefficients are fitted transcendentals rather than forced icosahedral quantities, and no null distribution was computed (Patterns 75, 98, 101). Nothing unique to Paper 31 survives forwarding. The only non-fitted element — the base formula e⁵ − 6√3 − 1 + 1/66 — is shared with the live corpus and is carried, on its own derivation and at honest precision (~50 ppb relative to CODATA, forcing argument open), by Paper 127 (Fine Structure Unified) and Paper 2 (2I Foundations). Paper 31 is not an ancestor those papers depend on; it merely stated the same base formula and then over-extended it. There is therefore no successor relationship to document — this is a retirement, not a supersession. Readers wanting the icosahedral origin of α at current discipline should consult Paper 127. Paper 31 is marked retired in the index.
