Density-Dependent Scalar Field Mechanism for Galactic Vertical Dynamics
Abstract
Density-Dependent Scalar Field Mechanism for Galactic Vertical Dynamics Author: John Edward Holland ORCID: 0009-0001-5120-8712© Copyright. John Holland. All rights reserved.Date: 19th January 2026 A causal link between a density-responsive singlet scalar sector and Milky Way vertical stellar dynamics This paper presents a narrowly scoped mechanism bridge between two independent results:(i) a field-theoretic framework establishing a gauge-invariant, density-responsive singlet scalar field coupled to the Standard Model via a Higgs portal, and(ii) an empirical identification of a density-anchored transition in the vertical stellar dynamics of the Milky Way using GAIA DR3 data. The purpose of the paper is not to introduce a new theoretical framework or to re-analyse observational data. Instead, it addresses a specific causal question: whether the scalar-field properties already defined necessarily imply a density-triggered change in vertical dynamical response when applied to disk galaxies. Using minimal one-dimensional vertical equilibrium reasoning, the paper shows that any scalar sector whose effective coupling to baryonic mass depends on local density generically produces distinct vertical dynamical regimes separated by a characteristic density scale. This result does not rely on curve fitting, galaxy-specific modelling, or new free parameters. Agreement with observations is assessed only at the qualitative and order-of-magnitude level. The Milky Way is treated as a well-measured test environment rather than a special system. Explicit falsification conditions and limits of applicability are stated. The analysis is intentionally conservative: no ultraviolet-to-galactic derivation is attempted, and no claim of uniqueness or universality is made. The paper is intended to stand independently as a mechanism-level link between theory and observation, clarifying how a density-responsive scalar sector could manifest in galactic vertical dynamics without invoking dark matter assumptions or modifying gravitational geometry.
