Abstract

This paper proposes a novel methodology for detecting distributed system anti-patterns by modeling high-fidelity traces as Colored Petri Nets (CPNs) and applying structural graph isomorphism rather than statistical aggregation. Key contributions:- Theoretical framework mapping distributed traces to Colored Petri Nets- Taxonomy of four anti-patterns (N+1 Query, Mega-Query, Synchronous Convoy, Partial Failure) with precise structural signatures- Two-pass detection architecture combining low-cost metric aggregation with targeted trace analysis- Proof that structural defects can be detected with minimal sample sizes (n=1)- Implementation using Dynatrace Grail and Model Context Protocol (MCP) for autonomous AI-driven investigation The approach achieves 100x cost reduction compared to full trace analysis while maintaining diagnostic accuracy, bridging the observability gap between end-user perception and backend execution logic in modern Flutter-GraphQL architectures.
