Why Order Formation is Universal: Linear Response as the Origin of Model Morphisms
Abstract
Gravitational clustering, neural synchronization, and bacterial swarming admit strikingly similar mathematical descriptions. We argue that this universality has a simple origin: physical law is locally linear near fixed points. Linear response enables the limiting procedures—overdamped limits, phase reductions, coarse-graining—that connect seemingly disparate models. We construct a reduction network linking Newton → HMF → Kuramoto → Vicsek → MIPS, where each arrow is a morphism preserving constraint geometry, not a causal derivation. We trace this framework to Hiroshi Shimizu's 1972 theory of biological motility at Kyushu University, a precursor to Kuramoto's synchronization model that remains underrecognized internationally. The same Landau-Stuart bifurcation structure appears in honeybee social learning, slime mold optimization, and neural criticality—supporting the Free Energy Principle's unification of physics and cognition. Order emerges not through causation but through constraint satisfaction, made universal by the linearity of natural law.
