Abstract

The heliodon represents a fundamental instrument in architectural design and solar analysis, enabling the physical simulation of solar radiation patterns on building models and urban configurations. This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the heliodon’s historical evolution, from its conceptual origins in the 1920s through its formalization in the 1950s to contemporary digital implementations. We analyze the underlying astronomical and geometric principles governing solar motion simulation, examine various typological classifications of heliodon devices, and evaluate their applications in sustainable design, daylighting analysis, and urban planning. Furthermore, we discuss the transition from mechanical to computational methods and assess the continuing relevance of physical heliodons in an era dominated by digital simulation tools. Through rigorous technical analysis and historical contextualization, this work establishes the heliodon as an indispensable pedagogical and analytical instrument in the architectural sciences.
