Abstract

In the contemporary landscape of geopolitical displacement and ideological realignment, the figure of the expatriate liberal emerges as a site of profound ambivalence, embodying both the promise of emancipatory critique and the specter of passive complicity. Drawing from the Russian cultural lexicon, terms such as “liberda” — a derogatory shorthand for liberals perceived as effete or detached — and “ochkonavty,” evoking notions of anal passivity or navigational cowardice, intersect with the psychological phenomenon of “Spanish shame” (vergüenza ajena), or vicarious embarrassment, to illuminate the erotic undercurrents of ideological subjectivity. This essay interrogates these concepts through a synthesis of psychoanalytic frameworks, including Freudian anality and shame, Jungian archetypes of the shadow, and Lacanian desire as mediated by ideology, alongside poststructuralist theories of power, eroticism, and performativity from thinkers such as Deleuze, Guattari, Foucault, Bataille, Kristeva, and Butler. By examining expatriate liberalism in postcolonial contexts, particularly the diasporic Russian and Ukrainian communities in Canada as depicted in contemporary media discourses, we uncover how these subjects navigate the tensions between proclaimed autonomy and submerged dependencies, where eroticism serves not merely as metaphor but as a structural force binding desire to power. The analysis reveals that Spanish shame, far from a mere affective residue, functions as a mechanism of ideological reproduction, compelling observers to internalize the expatriate’s performative inadequacies, thereby reinforcing hegemonic norms of agency and resistance.
