Abstract

The Varginha incident of January 1996 represents one of the most extensively documented and controversial cases in modern ufology, distinguished by multiple independent eyewitnesses, alleged military capture operations, medical professional involvement, mysterious deaths, and persistent urban legends that continue nearly three decades later. This comprehensive paper examines the events in Varginha, Minas Gerais, Brazil, through a rigorous multidisciplinary lens—analyzing eyewitness testimonies, official military investigations, medical evidence, cultural impact, and the subsequent evolution of folkloric narratives. The case involves reports of UFO sightings, encounters with non-human entities, alleged military capture operations involving Brazilian and possibly U.S. forces, the controversial death of Military Police Corporal Marco Eli Chereze, government denial, and the 2025 revelation of neurosurgeon testimony claiming direct interaction with a captured being. Beyond the initial incident, this study documents the transformation of these events into enduring urban legends, including the “Juca” narrative involving the University of Campinas (Unicamp), alleged international negotiations involving astronaut Marcos Pontes, and claims implicating forensic pathologist Fortunato Badan Palhares. This paper synthesizes available evidence while maintaining critical distance from both skeptical and believer perspectives, examining how documented events intertwine with speculation and folklore. The incident has profoundly impacted Brazilian culture—earning designation as “Brazil’s Roswell”, creating significant tourism infrastructure, and continuing to inspire investigations, legal actions, and documentary films nearly thirty years later.
