Abstract
The public health sector in Nigeria is one that has been faced with numerous challenges thereby reducing its capacities at delivering the mandates given to it. To overcome its seemingly insurmountable huddles, donors have had cause to come in to remedy health care situations in the country. To this end, this study has made an attempt at assessing donor agencies and public health in Nigeria with reference to the Bill and Melinda Gates project in Gombe state. Pregnant women and newborn are the most vulnerable and had suffer common diseases like, Malaria, diarrhoea, Poliomyelitis, cholera, measles, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and IVVF, among others have held sway on the country’s citizens’ health with several lives lost and many more incapacitated by the health attacks. The governments at all levels in Nigeria have made several efforts towards improving the public health delivery in the country, however, these efforts have not been able to take the country out of its high mortality rate index due to maternal and lots of child death at birth stage. This study discovered that the Bill and Melinda Gates is one donor that has invested so much in the public health sector of the country as a matter of international moral obligation, justifying the theoretical framework used. Data for the work were collected from both primary and secondary sources using both content analysis and simple percentage tables in the presentation of the collected data. Structured questionnaires were administered to respondents purposively sampled. The study concludes that, Bill and Melinda Gates as a donor agency has a strong significant positive impact on the improvement of health care delivery in Gombe state. It therefore recommends among others the need for the Nigerian governments to increase its efforts at tackling the health challenges facing the masses through the instrumentality of the traditional combined with orthodox medicine.
