Improving the Performance of the Capriccio Method by Migrating to the Open-Source Programming Language Julia
Abstract
Context: This bachelor thesis was originally submitted on 25.10.2024 and supervised by Sebastian Pfallerand Maximilian Ries. J. Roksvaag, "Improving the Performance of the Capriccio Method by Migrating tothe Open-Source Programming Language Julia", Bachelor Thesis, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), 2024 Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to reevaluate the current state of the Capriccio method; withrespect to both its mathematical foundations and its implementation as a computer pro-gram. To this end, a new point-wise coupling constraint is introduced, which promisesfaster execution and more accurate results while being conceptually simpler. Further-more, a closer look at the weighting factor α, which has its origins in the Arlequinmethod, is taken, and a new approach of defining α using a partial differential equationis presented and discussed. The Capriccio method is then implemented in the open-source programming languageJulia. This implementation makes use of the point-wise coupling constraint and the newlyintroduced definition for α. It is then compared to the existing MATLAB implementationof the Capriccio method, both in terms of execution time and with respect to resultaccuracy, by running simulations on identical sample systems with nearly identical inputparameters on both implementations. These results are then compared and discussed.
