From Cubist Influence to Sculptural Expression: A Comparative Formal Study of Sadequain and Ossip Zadkine
Abstract
Pakistan’s cultural history traces its origins back thousands of years ago, bringing the artistictraditions of the Indo-Pak subcontinent to the fore in Pakistani art. Modern Pakistani art emergedthrough a dynamic interplay between indigenous visual heritage and Western modernist movements, introduced during the colonial and postcolonial periods. Syed Sadequain Naqqash stands as apre-eminent figure in this adaptation. This paper argues that although Sadequain’s early artisticdevelopment reflects an engagement with Cubism, but his mature work demonstrates a strongerconceptual and formal alignment with the sculptural modernism of Ossip Zadkine. This study revealshow Sadequain translated three-dimensional sculptural sensibilities into two-dimensionalcompositions through a comparative formal analysis of line, shape, and form. The research appraisesSadequain not merely as a Cubist-influenced painter but as an artist whose expressive languageresonates deeply with Zadkine’s fragmented, monumental, and emotionally charged approach to thehuman figure.
