Abstract

As the ageing population grows the number of hip fracture injuries are expected to increase. Ireland’s over-65 population has grown by 35% over the past decade (806,300 people) and is expected to almost double by 2040. The expected demand for hip fracture injury related healthcare services will significantly impact future healthcare provision. Recent literature indicates that hip fracture injuries are more likely to occur during adverse weather. In this research we integrate weather and demographics data with Ireland’s clinical hip fracture database to predict the likely future demand of this service both nationally and regionally.
