Abstract

William Colgate (1783–1857), founder of what would eventually become the Colgate-Palmolive Company, represents one of history’s most compelling examples of how deep religious faith and systematic generosity can coexist with—and perhaps even catalyze—extraordinary business success. This paper offers a comprehensive yet accessible examination of Colgate’s life, tracing his journey from humble immigrant origins to his emergence as one of New York City’s most prosperous industrialists, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to Christian principles and progressive tithing. Born in England to a family of modest means, Colgate emigrated to America as a teenager, where he received formative counsel from a canal boat captain who urged him to honor God through faithful tithing. In 1806, he founded his soap and candle business with a solemn pledge to dedicate ten percent of all earnings to God’s work. As his enterprise prospered, Colgate systematically increased his giving—from 10% to 20%, then 30%, 40%, and ultimately 50% of his income—embodying his conviction that “the more he gave, the more he prospered.” This paper explores the historical evidence surrounding Colgate’s tithing practices, his active engagement in Baptist church leadership, and his philanthropic involvement with Bible distribution societies and educational institutions—including the university that now bears his name. It further examines the enduring legacy of faith-integrated business ethics that he helped establish. The study situates Colgate’s life within broader analytical frameworks, including stewardship theology, the Protestant work ethic thesis, and contemporary research on generosity and human flourishing. Finally, it seeks to reconcile the inspirational narrative often celebrated in Christian discourse with critical historical inquiry—distinguishing verifiable facts from later embellishments—while honoring the authentic faith commitments that shaped Colgate’s remarkable life and lasting corporate influence.
