Three Fermion Generations from Spectral Geometry
Abstract
We show that the number of fermion generations is constrained by spectral–geometric principlesand satisfies the strict, model–independent bound Ngen ≤ 3. This result follows from the combination oftwo theorem–level bounds and a dynamical injectivity principle derived from the spectral action. First, theKO–dimension 6 finite algebraAF =C⊕H⊕M3(C)admits exactly three minimal central idempotents, and therefore at most three inequivalent fermionicsectors. Second, the effective spectral potential Veff(ρ) induced by the spectral action is a stable sexticpolynomial whose derivative admits at most three positive roots, implying the existence of at most threelocal minima in the physical interval. We then introduce a dynamical Spectral Exclusion Principle (SEP),derived from spectral action minimization under explicit regularity assumptions, which enforces a one–toone correspondence between vacuum minima of Veff(ρ) and fermionic sectors. Together, these ingredientsimply the rigorous bound Ngen ≤ 3. The realization Ngen = 3 is obtained conditionally: if Veff(ρ) lies in thetriple–well regime and exhibits three non–degenerate local minima in ρ ∈ (0,1), then SEP forces a distinctfermionic sector to occupy each minimum, yielding Ngen = 3. For the Standard Model spectral triple, wecompute the relevant Seeley–DeWitt coefficients and verify that they fall in the triple–well region, so thatNgen = 3 is dynamically realized. We further show that this realization is radiatively stable at one loopand compatible with standard unification features. The framework suggests additional phenomenologicaldirections (e.g. neutrino masses and cosmological signatures), which lie beyond the scope of the presentanalysis.
