Abstract

RBT-Law v1.0 introduces the Thermodynamic Law of the Attention Bottleneck, establishing a structural constraint that explains why the smartphone interface cannot serve as the long-term substrate for AI-first, ambient technological systems. The law defines the smartphone as a thermodynamic attention bottleneck: a high-pressure, non-reversible interface regime that collapses distributed cognition, compresses attention, and violates ΔR (the reversible stress constant). Because ambient systems require reversibility, continuity, and low-pressure environmental integration, the smartphone becomes thermodynamically incompatible with the next interface era. This document formalizes the RBT-Law mathematically and architecturally, situating it within the Raynor Stack (time → attention → AI → warmth → ambience → aura → field) and the broader substrate of Ambient Architecture. It provides a rigorous foundation for understanding why ambient, environmental interfaces must replace legacy pressure interfaces in AI-driven environments. RBT-Law v1.0 serves as a canonical reference for researchers in human–AI interaction, thermodynamic interface design, cognitive systems, and post-smartphone architectures. It offers the first explicit framing of interface viability as a thermodynamic phenomenon rather than a behavioral or UX concern.
