Apple's Vision Pro Expansion Strategy
Abstract
This case study examines Apple’s strategic efforts to advance the Vision Pro ecosystem between 2023 and 2025. Rather than merely introducing new hardware, Apple integrated hardware, software, and services to accelerate the development of spatial computing. The narrative begins with the initial launch of the Vision Pro, then traces the subsequent releases of VisionOS 2.0 and VisionOS 2.6, as well as the transition to the M5 chip—a shift that significantly enhanced speed, comfort, and utility, particularly for enterprise customers. A core component of Apple’s approach was maintaining a cohesive ecosystem. The company actively collaborated with partners across the entertainment, education, and business sectors to broaden adoption, despite persistent challenges related to high pricing and limited supply. Notably, Apple managed to balance its focus between consumer and enterprise markets by leveraging partnerships to deliver immersive content. The leadership team continuously evaluated a pivotal question: Should the Vision Pro remain a premium, niche product, or should Apple expand accessibility through more affordable devices such as smart glasses? This strategic decision will be instrumental in determining the future trajectory of spatial computing and Apple’s overall direction in the industry.
