Abstract

The Ties That Bind Asheville is a participatory, site-based installation developed through long-term research into socially engaged art, arts-in-health practice, and ethical frameworks for collective making. This document articulates the conceptual foundations of the project, including authorship in participatory contexts, the role of invisible labor, and the use of container design to support ethical engagement without diluting artistic intent. Rather than offering facilitation instructions, this text situates the project within broader discourses on care, stewardship, and public participation, contributing a model for sustaining meaning and integrity in open-ended community art practices.
