Geometrical Confinement of Energy in the 0-Sphere Model: A Topological Mechanism Underlying Rest Mass and Zitterbewegung
Abstract
Description [33 Essential] This work develops a geometric and topological account of rest mass and Zitterbewegung within the 0-Sphere model, showing that both phenomena arise naturally from the confinement of energy along closed, proper-time–parametrized trajectories rather than from local field excitations or point-particle attributes. In the 0-Sphere framework, energy transport is fundamentally one-dimensional and history-dependent, constrained to thermal geodesics connecting localized kernels. When such transport becomes topologically confined—closing into self-consistent loops in proper time—energy can no longer be exchanged with the environment. This geometric confinement manifests operationally as rest mass: a persistent, localized energy content maintained by internal phase circulation rather than by static localization in space. Within this picture, Zitterbewegung is reinterpreted not as a pathological high-frequency trembling of a point particle, but as the observable imprint of internal spinorial phase accumulation along confined trajectories. The characteristic frequency emerges from the separation between external bosonic motion and internal SU(2) spinorial rotation already identified in the 0-Sphere thermal-geodesic structure. What appears as rapid oscillatory motion in standard relativistic quantum mechanics is shown here to encode a deeper geometric fact: confined energy necessarily carries an internal clock defined by proper-time phase circulation. The analysis clarifies the geometric origin of rest mass without invoking local mass terms, Higgs-type mechanisms, or vacuum energy. Mass is not introduced as a parameter but arises as a topological invariant associated with closed histories of energy transport. The Compton scale appears as a geometric consequence of phase closure conditions, while inertia reflects the resistance of these closed phase structures to deformation under external interactions. This work fits naturally within the connection-based and integral-based ontology developed in the preceding papers. Whereas Part I established why physical observables in the 0-Sphere model are defined along one-dimensional trajectories, and Part II showed how conservation laws emerge as geometric consistency conditions along such histories, the present paper demonstrates how localised, persistent energy—rest mass itself—emerges when those histories become topologically closed. In this sense, rest mass is identified as a special case of connection-based observables: a holonomy in proper time rather than a local field attribute. Importantly, this perspective does not alter the empirical predictions of relativistic quantum mechanics. Instead, it reorganizes their conceptual foundation, explaining why rest mass and Zitterbewegung appear ubiquitously and unavoidably once energy is geometrically confined. The standard Dirac description is recovered as an effective representation of this underlying geometric structure. By grounding mass and internal motion in topological confinement rather than local fields, the work further reinforces the broader conclusion of the 0-Sphere program: physical reality is fundamentally described by histories, connections, and accumulated phases, with spacetime locality and field-based quantities emerging as secondary, effective descriptors. Relation to Preceding Work Connection to Part I (Zenodo, 2025):This paper builds directly on Geometric Structure of Spinorial Phase Accumulation along Thermal Geodesicshttps://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18067760which established the one-dimensional nature of energy transport in the 0-Sphere model and identified SU(2) spinorial phase accumulation along thermal geodesics as a physically real process. Connection to Part II (Zenodo, 2026):It is conceptually aligned with From Curvature to Connection: Revisiting the Geometric Origin of Conservation Lawshttps://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18135855which showed that conservation laws arise as geometric consistency conditions of accumulated phase structure rather than from local dynamical sources. Connection to Part III (Zenodo, 2026):Together with Part III: Connection-Based Observableshttps://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18203433the present work reinforces the primacy of integral and holonomy-based observables, extending this principle from interference and gauge phenomena to the very origin of rest mass and internal particle dynamics. Relation to Integral-Based Ontology (Zenodo, 2026):This work is also complementary toThe Cosmological Constant Problem Dissolved by an Integral-Based Ontologyhttps://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18275142in which vacuum energy is shown to be ill-defined in a framework where only exchangeable, history-based energy contributes physically. Here, rest mass appears precisely as non-exchangeable, geometrically confined energy—further clarifying the ontology.
