Oughtness as the Direction of Relational Structure
Abstract
This paper reframes the classical is/ought problem by relocating morality outside cognition. Rather than treating normativity as something agents construct, justify, or project, the paper shows that moral orientation arises from the relational structure of the world itself. Through three structural moves and a concise demonstration, it argues that “oughtness” is the lived curvature of alignment and misalignment within a relationally ordered reality. The is/ought gap appears only under a cognitive‑first ontology; once morality is recognized as pre‑cognitive and structural, the gap dissolves. The result is a unified account of normativity with implications for theology, psychology, cognitive science, and ethics.
