Music phenomenon and the Human experience
Abstract
Due to a significant amount of scientific research done concerning the effects of music inHumans over the centuries, I find it relevant to analyze and datacross credible results gatheredby various fields of study along the way, in an attempt to better understand the phenomenon ofmusic and its interaction with us Human beings. In a bibliographic research that started in ancient Greece and brought me all the way back tothe XXI century, I dug deep into the remarkable work of several Philosophers, Scientists andMusicians in order to find interconnection dots that could help me build the bridges betweenthem, with the ultimate goal of unveiling what's behind the Music phenomenon, at least whatwe can assure for a fact so far.In this multidisciplinary research project I begin by exploring passages of Socrates, Aristotelesand Plato reflections on Music and how they understood the phenomenon in its different ways. Also the way they relate Music with the Human Mind and Body, in an intriguing ,althoughsometimes uncomfortable discussion, can give the reader a good perspective on theimportance of ancient philosophy to the modern study of phenomena related to sound andmusic. These philosophers focused on perceiving music beyond its technical view, consideringand studying its interactions with the Mind and Body, first noting its psychological curativecapabilities, as well as its relation with society and further implications. Science is the step ahead to unveil how this phenomenon really works and it is throughscientific data that I attempt to clarify this, analyzing credible studies that I found relevant tothis research. For this I had the privilege of getting in touch with professor Charles Spence, whose work ´Gastrophysics' I had read already as research for this project, and he gave me aheads up on how not only sound, but specifically music can, and will interact with our food anddrinking experience and really our psyche in general affecting our decision making and wellbeing.
