Abstract

This document presents a compilation of 23 best practices on prevention and enforcement mechanisms against cross-border pollution and wildlife crimes. These practices have been identified, analyzed and systematized within the framework of Work Package (WP) 3 of the research project TRANSNATURE, Transboundary governance models of biodiversity protection, co-funded by the European Union in the framework of the European partnership Biodiversa+. The TRANSNATURE project examines how cross-border and transboundary governance arrangements can enhance biodiversity protection and contribute to preventing ecological degradation, including cross-border pollution and transnational wildlife crime. WP 3 focuses specifically on cross-border pollution and transnational wildlife crime, with the objective of assessing whether transboundary biodiversity conservation initiatives within the project’s case studies enable the development of concrete mechanisms for prevention and enforcement. Within this framework, the present compilation aims to provide evidence-based insights into effective practices operating across national borders that strengthen cooperation, enforcement capacity, and institutional coordination in addressing pollution and wildlife crime.
