The Extraction Field: Deriving the Vacuum Expectation Value from Conservation of Degrees of Freedom
Abstract
The Standard Model of particle physics treats the vacuum expectation value (VEV) $v \approx 246$ GeV as an input parameter derived from the Fermi constant $G_F$, while the masses of the W boson, Z boson, and Higgs boson are governed by independent coupling constants with no explicit conservation relation among them. In this paper, we propose a fundamentally different interpretation: the Higgs field operates as an Extraction Field—a mechanism that extracts degrees of freedom from particles rather than "granting" them mass. Building upon McChesney's economic concept of Rent Extraction, we demonstrate that the VEV can be derived directly from the measured masses of the W, Z, and Higgs bosons through a simple conservation relation rooted in Pythagorean geometry: $$v = \sqrt{M_W^2 + M_Z^2} + m_H$$ Our calculation yields $v_{\text{calc}} = 246.66 \pm 0.11$ GeV, consistent with the Standard Model value of $v_{\text{SM}} = 246.22$ GeV within 0.18%. This approach requires no free parameters and no fine-tuning, standing in stark contrast to the Standard Model's hierarchy problem, which demands adjustments on the order of $10^{-34}$. We discuss the residual $\sim 0.44$ GeV discrepancy as a potential signature of observer effects inherent in four-dimensional spacetime measurements.
