Abstract

Digital payments have shifted from being a convenience tool to a core business infrastructure for Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Among all rails, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) stands out because it enables low-cost acceptance (QR-based), instant settlement, and interoperability across banks and apps. This paper assesses how UPI adoption can influence three practical MSME outcomes: (i) sales and customer conversion, (ii) cash-flow stability through faster collections and improved working capital cycles, and (iii) tax compliance by strengthening transaction traceability and record readiness. The analysis uses secondary evidence and official statistics to connect UPI growth with enterprise formalisation signals such as Udyam registration and reported investment. It argues that UPI’s real value for “Viksit Bharat 2047” lies not only in transaction volume, but in how it upgrades business discipline, builds trust, and reduces frictions for small firms. Still, benefits are not automatic. MSMEs face challenges such as payment failures, reconciliation burden, fraud risks, digital literacy gaps, and uncertain pricing policies for merchant charges. The paper proposes a governance and adoption pathway combining capability building, simple accounting integration, risk controls, and targeted policy nudges so that UPI becomes a measurable enabler of MSME productivity, compliance, and resilience.
