Mitigating Cost Asymmetry in Modern Warfare: The Role of Low-Cost Autonomous Systems Across Domains
Abstract
In the evolving landscape of modern conflict, cost asymmetry has emerged as a defining challenge. This occurs when inexpensive offensive systems compel defenders to employ responses that are orders of magnitude more costly. The proliferation of commercially derived unmanned systems across air, land, and maritime domains has democratized the ability to impose strategic costs. This paper investigates how low-cost autonomous systems can serve as a countermeasure by recalibrating cost-exchange ratios through swarming and attritable platforms. It also examines technical vulnerabilities, integration hurdles, and ethical dilemmas. The conclusion argues that low-cost autonomy represents a transformative strategic variable capable of restoring balance in multi-domain warfare.
