THE CHILLER-TOWER EFFICIENCY TRADE-OFF: Maximizing ROI through Dynamic Condenser Water Optimization
Abstract
The optimization of large-scale chilled water plants represents one of the most significant opportunities for energy conservation in the modern built environment. This report provides an exhaustive technical analysis of three primary control scenarios: Fixed Speed, VFD with a Fixed Setpoint, and VFD with a Dynamic Setpoint, using a standardized site parameter profile of 713 lps (11,300 GPM) flow and a 200 kW nominal fan capacity. By applying the "Total Power Bowl" methodology—balancing marginal cooling tower fan power increases against significant compressor lift reductions—this study identifies a 12% to 20% annual energy saving potential. Crucially, the analysis integrates mechanical safety constraints, including compressor surge maps and a 20°C (68°F) minimum temperature floor, to ensure thermodynamic optimization does not compromise equipment longevity.
