'Syllogism in Dentistry': An Aristotelian Approach to Clinical Reasoning- A Review.
Abstract
Dentistry is a clinical science that necessitates ongoing decision-making amidst biological variability and diagnostic ambiguity. Logical reasoning, especially deductive reasoning via syllogisms, is essential for converting theoretical knowledge into clinical practice. A syllogism comprises a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion that follows logically. This classical Aristotelian model remains pertinent in dentistry, particularly in diagnosis, treatment planning, material selection, and evidence-based decision-making. This article examines the concept of syllogism in dentistry, its applications within dental specialties, its congruence with evidence-based practice, and its educational significance in fostering structured clinical reasoning among dental professionals. Key Words Syllogism; Deductive reasoning; Clinical decision-making; Evidence-based dentistry; Dental education.
