The Abraham–Lorentz–Dirac (ALD) equation for classical radiation in 3D Geometry
Abstract
This technical note provides a geometric and information-theoretic interpretation of the long-standing pathologies of the Abraham–Lorentz–Dirac (ALD) equation for classical radiation reaction. Rather than attributing runaway solutions and pre-acceleration solely to the point-particle idealization, the analysis frames these effects as consequences of a projection–iteration imbalance in three-dimensional observation. The ALD equation probes third-order relational sensitivity through the proper-time derivative of acceleration, exceeding the effective projection capacity available at classical electromagnetic scales. This perspective clarifies why the Landau–Lifshitz approximation succeeds: by truncating the effective iteration depth, it restores partial coherence and eliminates unphysical solutions. A dimensionless, Lorentz-invariant relational stress parameter, \Xi = 2q^2 \gamma^3 a / (3mc^4), is introduced as a diagnostic measure of proximity to coherence breakdown. Comparison with quantum thresholds shows that Schwinger pair production and Unruh thermal effects intervene at \Xi \ll 1, providing physical regularization before classical pathologies are reached. The analysis does not modify special relativity, Maxwell’s equations, or quantum electrodynamics; it offers a diagnostic framework for understanding the domain of validity of classical radiation reaction.
