The Fine Structure Constant from Icosahedral Geometry: Vertex, Face, and Holographic Perspectives
Abstract
The fine structure constant α admits a basic geometric derivation from icosahedral structure: α⁻¹ = e⁵ − 6√3 − 1 + 1/66 = 137.036006, matching CODATA at ~50 ppb relative (≈ 0.05 ppm) with zero free parameters, all integers and operations forced by S³/2I geometry. This basic derivation is the load-bearing structural result of the paper and is offered at STATUS: DERIVED. Harmonic corrections in the icosahedral 1/66 basis can be constructed that match CODATA 2018 (vertex perspective, 2 terms at orders 66³ and 66⁴) and CODATA 2022 (face perspective, 3 terms at orders 66³, 66⁴, 66⁵) to parts-per-trillion precision. The structural basis (powers of 1/66 = 1/(D!×(V−1)) where D = 3, V = 12) is icosahedrally forced. The coefficient values appearing in the constructions — (2V−1)/V, (F−V)/F, (F−1)/(V−2), 1/(D−1)², (V−1)/E — are constructible from icosahedral counting quantities in plausible interpretations, pending null analysis of generic constructibility (§4 audit; scheduled in §8.5). The match to CODATA at parts-per-trillion is suggestive evidence that derivation to that precision is conjectured possible — explicit derivation of the specific coefficients is open work. These refinements are offered at STATUS: SUGGESTIVE, sister to the structural framework but not load-bearing. A closure equation derived from three icosahedrally-motivated ansatz elements — V² = 144 (a natural icosahedral integer whose specific derivation from S³/2I geometry is not given here), the boundary closure correction −½, and the self-referential coupling term [D(V−1)/2⁶]α — yields α⁻¹ = 137.035999113, which is the 11:5 weighted average of vertex and face values to 3 ppt. This is offered at STATUS: SUGGESTIVE: the closure equation is presented as construction in ansatz elements rather than derivation from first principles. The 11:5 emergence is structurally striking but may reflect coordination between the §3.1, §3.2, and §3.3 constructions; the Pattern 75 audit of this coordination is scheduled (§8.5). The physical mechanism interpretation — that the proton's 12 divisor channels of H(3) = 108 correspond to the vertex perspective, and the electron's 36 coprime channels of 108 correspond to the face perspective — is offered at STATUS: OBSERVED structural correspondence: the arithmetic identities d(108) = 12 = V and φ(108) = 36 = (D!)² are real; the identification with proton and electron channels requires independent derivation of structural channel counts not undertaken here. The testable empirical predictions of §7 are the load-bearing empirical claims of this paper: (1) a dedicated comparison of atom-recoil versus electron g−2 determinations of α should find a persistent offset of 9.3 × 10⁻⁸ that does not decrease with improved precision; (2) CODATA 2026 and subsequent releases will not continue monotonically toward higher α⁻¹ but will oscillate within or stabilise inside the 9.3 × 10⁻⁸ vertex-face window.
