Abstract

This paper investigates the disjointed letters (ḥurūf muqaṭṭaʿāt) in the Qur’an, focusing on 29 Surahs where these letters appear at the beginning. Using a comparative structural and phonetic approach, each Arabic letter is analyzed in relation to its Phoenician counterpart, phonetic articulation, original symbolism, and structural meaning within the Surah. The study further applies cognitive entropy measures to quantify the degree of uncertainty or informational content that these letters provide prior to reading the full text, thereby treating them as preliminary cognitive indicators of the Surah’s themes. The research combines linguistic, semiotic, and quantitative methodologies, highlighting the multi-layered role of disjointed letters in the Qur’an:Structural guidance: Letters as markers of thematic and narrative frameworks in the Surah.Symbolic significance: Historical and phonetic connections with the Phoenician alphabet revealing underlying semantic patterns.Cognitive information: Use of entropy theory to assess the predictive power of the letters regarding the Surah’s content. This interdisciplinary approach situates the disjointed letters within a broader academic context, linking Qur’anic studies, historical linguistics, information theory, and semiotics, and provides a novel framework for understanding their function as both symbolic and cognitive cues.
