Abstract

The fragmentation of Germany in 1945 led to the birth in 1949 of two German states, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR), both representing opposing social and political projects. The latter, which continued to exist until its integration into the FRG on 3 October 1990, embarked on a socialist course based on the Soviet model. It tried to reconcile the “progressive traditions” of German culture with the cultural canons imported from the USSR from a Marxist-Leninist perspective. The aim was also to create a properly socialist culture that would overcome the bourgeois separation between the intelligentsia and the world of work. These projects, however, could not avoid continually seeing themselves in the capitalist mirror of the FRG, which increased their own contradictions. The persistence of cultural differences between East and West after the unification of Germany, however, shows to what extent, under what influences and within what limits there was a cultural development in the GDR that was unique to the West. This chapter will reflect on this socialist cultural project and on the internal and external aspects that prevented it from becoming a reality.---La fragmentación de Alemania en 1945 dio pie al nacimiento en 1949 de dos Estados alemanes, la República Federal de Alemania (RFA) y la República Democrática Alemana (RDA), representativos de sendos proyectos sociales y políticos contrapuestos.
