Advancements in Colored Electrochromic Glass and Survey of Research Group Publications
Abstract
This technical review, authored by Ahmed M. Hala of Gaseous Electronics LLC, evaluates the evolution of colored electrochromic (EC) glass technology from 2014 through early 2026. While standard inorganic materials like tungsten trioxide (W O3) and nickel oxide dominate the commercial market with traditional gray and blue tints, this note explores the persistent challenges in scaling non-traditional colors such as red, green, and yellow. A central focus is placed on the research group’s success in utilizing radio frequency (RF) plasma modification to develop high-performance inorganic-organic hybrids. The review provides a techno-economic analysis for transitioning lab-scale plasma-modified W O3 hybrids to industrial float glass production, estimating a production cost of $20–35/m2 with a potential 3–5 year break-even period. Finally, a survey of publications from the research group (including collaborators from Suleyman Demirel University and KACST) demonstrates the successful realization of a full color spectrum—including red, green, and yellow—through advanced materials like porphyrin-polythiophene copolymers and V2O5-PEDOT hybrids.
