Abstract

Sun-facing satellites, often positioned at the stable Sun-Earth L1 point, act as sentinels for solar activity. This location balances gravitational forces, enabling halo or Lissajous orbits that keep the spacecraft ”upstream” in the solar wind flow toward Earth. They provide about an hour’s advance notice of incoming solar disturbances, crucial for protecting satellites, power grids, and aviation. Key examples include NASA’s SOHO and ACE, which have been operational for decades, capturingdata on solar flares and plasma structures.
