Field structure of the once-punctured 2-sphere
Abstract
We define two operations ⨁ and ⨀, which we will call spherical operations, on the unit 2-sphere s2 punctured at the north pole N=(0,0,1) and we show that the punctured sphere s2-{N} is an additive commutative group with respect to spherical addition ⨁ and a multiplicative commutative monoid with respect to spherical multiplication ⨀, such that the set (s2-{N},⨁, ⨀) is a field.
