Bravery & Flourishing | Workshop
Abstract
This seminar offers an applied, strengths-based exploration of the VIA character strength Bravery, grounded in contemporary positive psychology research and practice. Designed as an evidence-informed learning experience, the seminar invites participants to explore bravery as the capacity to act in alignment with values despite fear, discomfort, or uncertainty, supporting wellbeing, engagement, and purposeful action. The session integrates reflective exercises, guided discussion, and structured goal-setting approaches to support participants in translating the character strength from concept into lived experience. Drawing on established frameworks in positive psychology, including strengths-based development and mental contrasting with implementation intentions (WOOP), the seminar emphasises practical application within everyday academic, professional, and personal contexts. Participants are encouraged to actively engage through reflection, dialogue, and intentional action, fostering both individual insight and shared learning. The seminar is designed to be adaptable across diverse learning environments and delivery formats, supporting transferability beyond a single context. Learning outcomes By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to: Clearly define the VIA character strength of Bravery and its role in human flourishing Identify personal and interpersonal benefits associated with acting courageously in the presence of fear or challenge Recognise patterns of underuse, optimal use, and overuse of bravery in daily life Apply evidence-informed reflective practices to navigate fear, uncertainty, and value-driven action Develop a simple, actionable plan for expressing bravery in ongoing personal, academic, or professional development This seminar forms part of a broader strengths-based learning approach that supports sustainable wellbeing, intentional growth, and applied positive psychology practice.
