Abstract

DeepCO2 model DeepCO2 is a process-based soil carbon modeling framework adapted from the HYDRUS-1D soil CO2 module that simulates depth-resolved CO2 production and transport under transient hydrothermal conditions within a 0-200 cm soil profile. The framework couples three sub-models: rainfall-driven water flow (“Make it Rain”), temperature-driven heat transport (“Warm it Up / Cool it Down”), and biologically driven CO2 production and transport (“CO2 Pro-Trans”). The soil profile is discretized into six functional layers with hydraulic, thermal, and biogeochemical parameters constrained by field and laboratory measurements across nine fields encompassing forests and cropland and their edges. Driven by daily meteorological forcing and dynamic groundwater boundary conditions, DeepCO2 resolves non-steady-state CO2 dynamics, including rainfall- and temperature-controlled root and microbial respiration, subsurface water and CO2 transport, and retention.
