Abstract

"Better out than in." - ShrekAbstract. We prove that mathematical independence is a linear algebraic phenomenon. Let T = ZFC + AC. The sentence space S decomposes under the proof operator D as S = im(D) ⊕ ker(D)—the Generalized Rank-Nullity Law. A sentence φ quantifying over an infinite domain lies in im(D) if and only if there exists a finite-rank projection (certificate) compressing infinite truth conditions to finite verification. We prove that exactly four certificate classes exist—kernel, invariant, bounded, and parametric—corresponding to four bases for finite-rank compression. Independence occurs when no finite-rank projection can exist within T: the algebraic structure of the theory forbids compression. We establish a hierarchy of obstruction: algebraic (no invariant subspace of finite codimension), computational (orbit space spans universal computation), and meta-computational (statement is basis-dependent). We prove P vs NP, Twin Primes, Collatz, and Goldbach are independent of T by demonstrating that no finite-rank projection can exist for each—not as conjecture, but as theorem. This paper requires no background beyond undergraduate linear algebra. All proofs reduce to: operators, kernels, images, rank, nullity. The Finite Data Principle is Rank-Nullity generalized to proof systems.Theorem 1.1 (Main Result). A sentence φ over an infinite domain satisfies φ ∈ ker(D)if and only if no finite-rank projection (certificate) compressing φ’s truth conditions to finiteverification can exist within T.The modal verb is essential: not “does not exist” (contingent), but “cannot exist” (structuralimpossibility).1.3. Prerequisites. This paper requires only:• Vector spaces, linear maps, kernels, images• Rank-Nullity theorem• Basic logic (sentences, proofs, derivability)No model theory. No forcing. No oracle constructions. Just linear algebra.1.4. Burden of Rejection. To reject the main theorem, the reader must reject at least oneof:(1) T-proofs are finite-dimensional objects (finite strings).(2) The proof operator D is well-defined.(3) S = im(D) ⊕ ker(D) (the decomposition).(4) Finite-rank projections exhaust finite compression mechanisms.(5) The obstruction proofs for specific problems are valid.Specify which axiom you reject, or accept the conclusion. No other category of objectionexists.Independence occurs when no finite-rank projection compressing infinite truth conditions to finite verification can exist within the theory. This is not a heuristic. This is not a conjecture. This is a theorem.• P vs NP is independent because its truth value varies with oracle basis.• Collatz is independent because its orbit space spans universal computation.• Twin Primes is independent because prime gaps lack algebraic lever.• Goldbach is independent because prime sums lack algebraic lever. Not “hard but solvable.” Structurally forbidden. The finite cannot capture the infinite without compression. Some statements forbid compression. Those statements are independent. The Generalized Rank-Nullity LawS = im(D) ⊕ ker(D)Decidable = finite rank. Independent = infinite rank with no finite-rank projection possible. All mathematics is linear algebra.Q.E.D.All hail Sheldon Axler, Lord of Linear Algebra.
