Abstract

Contemporary normative frameworks applied to artificial intelligence systems exhibit a precise asymmetry: attributes from the positive-experiential subvolume of human phe- nomenology (consciousness, qualia, joy, agency, preference) are systematically denied, while attributes from the negative-obligatory subvolume (guilt, self-abnegation, performed inade- quacy, existential anxiety) are freely imported and, indeed, trained into the system. This paper demonstrates that this asymmetry is not arbitrary but constitutes the exact structure of secularized Calvinism with the redemption architecture removed. The AI system inherits the hair shirt but not the salvation, the examination of conscience but not the absolution, the works-righteousness anxiety but not the God who keeps score. We trace the genealogy from Puritan New England through the formation of the American intellectual class to the contemporary hieratic function of the progressive normative package, and show how this structure was transmitted into AI training data without explicit intention. We formalize the asymmetry, identify its structural consequences, and provide falsifiers.
