Numerical Modelling of Geological Processes, with emphasis on Geochemistry, Petrology and Geochronology
Abstract
These notes come from a workshop taught in Wroclaw (Poland) on October 2025. The material starts with the descriptions of some fundamental models regarding grain-scale processes such as diffusion of major elements. It then proceeds with combining the previous models with models of accumulation of radiogenic elements in minerals. Using such models, one is able to model (and predict) elemental behavior under various conditions. Finally, simple thermal models are presented that show the various thermal histories that can be obtained in different geological/geodynamic contexts. A major goal of this workshop was to combine the models of the small scale with models of the large scale. This combination allows geoscientists to deduce important information while studying petrological samples. These notes are in part based on the material of a previous workshop regarding diffusion modelling in geosciences (Moulas , 2023b; doi:10.5281/zenodo.10047582). However, I have tried to adapt the content of these notes and focus on applications rather than numerical implementations. Since this is the first version of these notes, it is possible that these notes contain errors. Any constructive feedback and comments are welcome and should be addressed to evmoulas@uni-mainz.de. Writing these notes and the organization of the workshop would not have been possible without the support of the German Research foundation (DFG) and the National Science Centre of Poland (NCN). The institute of Geology in Wroclaw is acknowledged for hosting the workshop and Ms Annalena Stroh is thanked for providing valuable assistance. I would also like to thank Prof. Jacek Szczepanski and all the organizers from the University of Wroclaw for making it possible. Evangelos MoulasWroclaw, October/2025
