Compulsive Buying in the Digital Era: The Role of Financial Anxiety, Peer Influence, and Digital Payment Ease
Abstract
The proliferation of digital technology and e-commerce platforms has significantly reshaped consumer behaviour, particularly among young adults, leading to an increase in compulsive buying behaviour. This study examines the complex interplay of peer pressure, financial anxiety, and ease of digital payment methods in shaping compulsive buying tendencies. A holistic approach was adopted, integrating social, psychological, and technological factors to provide a comprehensive understanding of compulsive buying behaviour in the digital era. Findings reveal that peer influence has a significant impact on compulsive buying behaviour, while financial anxiety has a limited effect. Contrary to expectations, demographic factors like gender and income do not play a significant role in influencing compulsive buying behaviour. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions and policy measures to promote responsible financial management among young consumers, emphasizing the importance of addressing social and psychological factors driving compulsive buying.
