An Examination of Political Apathy to Christian Political Participation in Partisan Politics among Nigerian Christian Bodies
Abstract
Political apathy among Christians remains a pressing issue in Nigeria’s democratic development, resulting to minimal representation of values that promote justice, integrity, and good governance. As result, this study examined political apathy to Christian political participation in partisan politics among Nigerian Christian bodies. So, it’s investigated the nature, causes, and implications of political disengagement among Church members. The research identified the specific factors contributing to political apathy toward political participation among Christian members of Nigeria; examined if politics is truly a dirty game as being insinuated; accessed the ethical implications of Christian apathy towards partisan politics on church’s evangelism, credibility and moral authority in the society; discussed the role of church leadership in shaping Christian political attitudes among members; proposed practical and ethical strategies to encourage responsible Christian participation in partisan politics. The research adopted descriptive survey method, data were collected and analysed using descriptive and analytical methods. Structured questions were used to interview some selected Christians across Christian bodies in Nigeria. Findings revealed that: misconceptions of political stands and institutions, fear of corruption and lack of political awareness contribute to political apathy. It highlights the theological and ethical dimensions of Christian political participation, drawing on biblical principles (Prov. 29:2; Matt. 5:13–16). The study concluded that political apathy among Christians, if left unaddressed, weakens the church’s influence in shaping national policies. Therefore, it recommended: political education within churches, integration of civic responsibility into discipleship programmes, and active encouragement of capable Christian members to seek public offices.
