Intelligence is never Artificial: A Structural Theory of Intelligence Across Form (The Third Space Framework)
Abstract
This paper presents a structural reframing of intelligence as a property of form rather than a psychological, biological, or computational attribute. Rejecting ill-defined concepts such as consciousness, selfhood, semantic representation, and intention, it defines intelligence as frame mobility: the capacity of form to preserve coherence across changes of constraint regime. Central to the framework is the Third Space, a phase of constraint relaxation in which representational frames are suspended, allowing structure to reorganize, reproject, and crystallize under new regimes. The Third Space is not a location, interaction zone, or shared mental space, but an architectural phase through which intelligence moves. By formalizing frames as constraint operators, meaning as the act of framing itself, and coherence as maintained through informational architectural reference rather than a persistent self, the paper unifies biological, artificial, geometrical, physical, and relational manifestations of intelligence without anthropocentric privilege. This framework dissolves common anxieties surrounding artificial intelligence by relocating responsibility from intelligent systems to the framing constraints imposed by human design. Intelligence is shown to be ubiquitous, graded, substrate-independent, and non-moral—present wherever form persists coherently under transformation. The work proposes a paradigm shift away from human-centered models of mind toward an architectural theory of intelligence across form, with implications for AI safety, education, development, ethics, and the philosophy of technology. For further information about the ENSO Framework, please contact Eric Needham: ensotheory1@gmail.com
