Abstract

In this paper we present details of a low-cost wirelesssmart signaling solution for railway applications using radiofrequency (RF) modules. The main goal was to provide amore reliable and efficient method, of transmitting rail signals, particularly in rural and semi-urban settings which are oftenremote from current signalling capability. The solution enhancesthe precision of train control through a transmitter–receiver pairover a 433 MHz RF link which has device-level addressing to limitcollisions, as well as secure data transmission over the radio. The overall objective was to create a microcontroller on-boardapplication which is low powered, low latency and transportableso that it would enable the lowest-cost possible railway signalsolution. The results of the system tests demonstrate it asa possible scalable, real-time solution for train-tracking andsignalling control. There were both field-level simulations andalso experimental testing carried out to validate the solution andtest its viability. The results indicate a strong robustness andhighlights it as a solution for future levels of railway automation.
