Technical Note: Kink Bands and GCI Interpretations
Abstract
This technical note records an independent, citable interpretation of kink-band–mediated deformation in refractory BCC alloy systems. It frames kink bands as a localized redistribution response that can activate alongside other deformation mechanisms (e.g., glide and twinning) rather than operating in isolation. The note maps this behavior to the Geometric Compression Index (GCI) framework and references the PCI internal update as a contrast parameter (edge-to-core polarity contrast) relevant to localized reorientation. A compact composition-weighted axis summary is provided for the Nb–Ta–Ti–Hf alloy family discussed in the associated Science work. This note is intended as an organizing lens and hypothesis generator, not a replacement for established crystallographic or dislocation-based models.
