Anticipation Series — Paper I: Physical Foundations of Anticipation: From Structural Persistence to Counterfactual Simulation
Abstract
Paper I of the Anticipation Series within the Radial Coherential Dynamics (RCD) research program. ABSTRACT:We present a physical framework for anticipation based on the concept of counterfactual simulation. A system anticipates when it can simulate possible futures at lower thermodynamic cost than experiencing them directly. We introduce the Anticipation Leverage L_A = S_avoided / S_sim as a global efficiency metric measuring the thermodynamic advantage of prediction over reaction. The framework establishes a hierarchy of cognitive modes—N1 (reactive), N2 (persistent), N3 (anticipatory)—distinguished by their use of memory for future-oriented computation. We show that L_A > 1 is the necessary condition for anticipation to be evolutionarily advantageous. Landauer's principle provides the thermodynamic floor for simulation costs. No field-theoretic Lagrangian is assumed; the treatment remains at the level of thermodynamic accounting and information-theoretic definitions. Explicit falsification conditions are provided.
