However, real-world failures rarely originate from AI alone. They emerge from the instability of human understanding. Even when AI is correct, human interpretation fluctuates. Understanding Sovereignty begins AI design from this premise. The Human Model Implicitly Assumed by Conventional AI Design Many AI systems implicitly assume humans who: Correctly interpret outputs Carefully read explanations Rationally judge limitations Self-correct misunderstandings Such humans rarely exist in reality. Humans: Make rushed decisions Skip context Interpret conveniently Overtrust or irrationally fear AI Understanding Sovereignty treats this realityas a design premise, not a user flaw. The Shift Introduced by Understanding Sovereignty This framework does not aim to build “smarter AI.” It aims to design AI systemsthat withstand unstable human understanding. Do not expect perfect judgment Do not assume explanations solve everything Embed misunderstanding, overtrust, and dependency into design assumptions The focus shifts from output accuracyto interaction with human understanding processes. From “Safe AI” to “Resilient Human-AI Relationships” Understanding Sovereignty does not attemptto make AI safe in isolation. It designs relationships that are difficult to break. Accidents occur even with correct AI Misunderstanding persists despite explanations Guardrails are crossed regardless of warnings Therefore, AI systems must includestructures that allow users to pause and reconsider. Conclusion of the AI Design Chapter AI design under Understanding Sovereignty is not about: Distrusting humans Re-educating users It is about designing systems that acceptthe inherent instability of human understanding. Only with this premisecan AI remain usable and sustainable in real society.
