Turkic Clothing Terminology in Khwarezm Turkic Texts (13th–14th Centuries): A Lexical and Comparative Study
Abstract
Clothing terminology reflects ethnic identity shaped by climate, customs, and history. Despite the diversity of traditional Turkic garments across vast territories, many items and their names have disappeared from modern usage. This study examines Turkic-origin clothing lexemes preserved in medieval Khwarezm Turkic texts (Mukaddimetü'l-Edeb, Kısasü'l-Anbiyâ, Muînül-Mürîd, Nehcü'l-Ferâdîs, and the Khwarezmian Qur'an translation), which have not been replaced by Arabic or Persian alternatives. Statistical analysis reveals 69% of terms are Turkic-origin, 21% Arabic-origin, and 10% Persian-origin, demonstrating Turkic lexemes' dominance in 13th–14th century sources. This research provides essential linguistic material for future historical-comparative studies in both synchronic and diachronic frameworks.
