Abstract

This dataset contains example input files, scripts, and instructions for running fracture pressurization simulations of Merapi volcano using the open-source Discrete Element Method software YADE. The provided workflow includes: (1) installing YADE (Linux/Ubuntu recommended), (2) generating a particle packing of the volcano geometry from a GTS surface mesh (packInGtsSurface_sizevarZ.py), (3) removing floating particles (treatPacking.py), (4) simulating fracture pressurization (pres.py), and (5) post-processing the simulation outputs using ParaView or plotting tools. Output files include particle positions, stress and displacement data, and 3D geometry in .vtu/.vtp formats. The scripts allow parameter adjustment, including particle size distribution, packing resolution, and fracture pressurization conditions, enabling reproducibility and adaptation to other configurations. Additionally, the deformation data corresponding to the 2020 instability crisis at Merapi, provided by the BPPTKG (Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi)–CVGHM (Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation) and used to constrain our models, are shared.
