NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS IN THE PEDIATRIC GROUP – BASIC REQUIREMENTS AND DISEASE DEPENDEND REQUIREMENTS – AN OVERVIEW
Abstract
Adequate nutrition during childhood is essential for optimal growth, development, and longterm health. The pediatric age group has unique nutritional requirements due to rapid physical growth, high metabolic demands, and continuous developmental changes. Nutritional inadequacy during this period can result in growth retardation, developmental delays, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to disease. Furthermore, children suffering from acute and chronic illnesses require disease-specific dietary modifications to meet altered metabolic needs. This article provides a comprehensive overview of nutritional requirements in the pediatric population, emphasizing macronutrients, micronutrients, energy, and fluid needs across various age groups. It also elaborates on dietary management and food requirements in common pediatric diseases such as protein-energy malnutrition, anemia, diarrhea, diabetes mellitus, celiac disease, congenital heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and pediatric obesity. Understanding pediatric nutritional needs and implementing appropriate dietary interventions play a vital role in improving child health outcomes and preventing long-term complications.
