The Photon-Electron Coupling in Hydrogen Emission: Lyman Series as Fundamental, Bridge Crossing in Balmer Series
Abstract
We demonstrate that the hydrogen emission spectrum encodes a fundamental photon-electron coupling through the Lyman series ratio Lyα/ Lyβ = 32/27 = χ⁵/D³, where χ = 2 is the Euler characteristic and D = 3 is spatial dimensions. The numerator 32 = χ⁵ is pure topology; its icosahedral realizations F + V = 32 (faces + vertices) and E + χ = 32 (edges + closure)are equivalent consequences of Euler's formula. The Balmer series ratio Hα/Hβ = 108/80 = 27/20 represents the first bridge crossing, where 108 = χ² × D³ is the hyperfactorial H(3) = 11 × 22 × 33. We derive that nf = χ = 2 for Balmer because the Rydberg term (n² − nf ²) factors as (n − χ)(n + χ), whichgenerates icosahedral numbers (V = 12, F + V = 32) only when the offset is χ². The first closed topology (χ = 2) corresponds to the first excited state (n = 2). This hierarchy—Lyman as fundamental coupling, Balmer as first bridgecrossing—explains why thermal emission processes exhibit peaks at 108 multiples. These results follow exactly from the Rydberg formula with no approximations.
